The Swearing part of Swearing In

I have been really UNpolitical lately on the TX Oasis, I know. My obsessiveness on the topic has been getting under MrB's skin. Just watching the circus surrounding the new congress and upcoming administration.

Some very brief comments:
  • Blago should be impeached if he's guilty, and it sure looks like he is. Guilty of being a total ass plus some stuff that's illegal and unethical as hell.
  • Burris should be seated. It's legal. It's a nasty and messy situation but that's what you have sometimes. Seat him and let the voters and the law sort it out over time.
  • I have as much love for Rick Warren as he has for me, but I am not overly vexed by the choice. Here's why: he's a Christian preacher who is going to ritually perform a prayer directed at a particular god, an invisible guy-in-the-sky, one of the jealous ones who can't tolerate the others. Everybody gets sworn in with a hand on a Bible (the Christian book comprised of the Old and New Testaments) and you are swearing your oaths to God - so there is already a huge chunk of Christianity inserted there. I believe that Obama is reaching out to the Far Right Christians because he is going to be their President too. He's throwing them a bone (a frikkin' bone, if you will). No. I can't stand the fundie views either, and they can't stand my heathenism, but we must all agree in this country that Obama is our guy according to the process that we accept. It's a political and diplomatic move.

I would like to see the day when it is not required to insert religious rituals and assessories that belong to a particular set of religious beliefs. I know that won't happen in my lifetime. We might think that we are progressive in the country, but we really aren't.

I was disgusted by the Rick Warren bone but you'll notice I haven't been disgusted enough to blog about it. I simply don't really care in the grand scheme of things. I got bigger fish to 'um ... set free.

And Burris, yeah, seat the guy. He doesn't come off as Obama 2 and would probably be unseated by a charismatic candidate next time around anyway, unless he's a spectacular senator. Laws is laws, and let's get on with it. Franken too. He won. It's over.

I love it that Al Franken is a Senator!
