Going nucular over artic - rantlet

Foxtrot hit one of my pet peeves! If the strip was longer, it could have rounded out my trio of annoying "mispronounced words by people who should know better". ARCTIC has a "c" after the "r". It is audible. Weather-people in the media are highly compensated and don't actually get it right that often. Pronouncing this word as ARTIC just adds a level of incompetence to the deliverer of an already rather unreliable product. grrrrrr.

Ha ha! It's even worse because weather people not only mispronounce the word Arctic ... they also misuse it as a synonym for cold. This wouldn't be that annoying, except for the fact that sometimes there are actually winds out of the Arctic that hit the lower 48. However, the term "Arctic wind" rarely means this literally.

Oh yes! Especially down here in the warm climates. I heard the words "arctic" and "bitter cold" to describe temperatures well above freezing.

I am a certified medical transcriptionist. All day, every day I'm hearing words mispronounced by people who should certainly know better. The two that just make me shudder are when pharynx and larynx are pronounced as far-nix and lar-nix instead of correctly as far-inx and lar-inx.

ee: I heard those mispronounced as you described all my life... but it wasn't by people who should know better. That's got to be annoying from doctors.

I tell ya. Stupid rules, for sure. My mother would be so annoyed with Bush. 'Nuculur' just drove her up the wall.

James McMurtry (who I just mentioned in a post) quotes his friend Max Crawford, "a good old boy can become an intellectual but an intellectual can't become a good old boy", and adds an anti-Bush comment of his own, "so if your granddad didn't say 'nucular', you don't get to say it either".

Not that he's suggesting Dubya is smart, just that he comes from different stock and different upbringing than he likes to tout. "Raised in the house of Barbara Bush" as he puts it.
