So he's against polygamy, is that what he's saying?

(graphic snagged from a web ring called "Wholesome Christian Family Lifestyles!" No... really!)

This is almost a comical exchange where McCain appears to be unable to grasp that a couple is made up of two people, regardless of their gender. [ABC transcript]
STEPHANOPOULOS: What is your position on gay adoption? You told the "New York Times" you were against it, even in cases where the children couldn't find another home. But then your staff backtracked a bit.

What is your position?

MCCAIN: My position is, it's not the reason why I'm running for president of the United States. And I think that two parent families are best for America.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, what do you mean by that, it's not the reason you're running for president of the United States?

MCCAIN: Because I think -- well, I think that it's -- it is important for us to emphasize family values. But I think it's very important that we understand that we have other challenges, too.

I'm running for president of the United States, because I want to help with family values. And I think that family values are important, when we have two parent -- families that are of parents that are the traditional family.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But there are several hundred thousand children in the country who don't have a home. And if a gay couple wants to adopt them, what's wrong with that?

MCCAIN: I am for the values that two parent families, the traditional family represents.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So, you're against gay adoption.

MCCAIN: I am for the values and principles that two parent families represent. And I also do point out that many of these decisions are made by the states, as we all know.

However, he does not seem to be opposed to this type of family:

McCain is a moron. Forget what he says. I just look at him and think, "This guy is going to be the leader of the free world?" C'mon. Really? I know it's not fair to judge this way but he looks like he's one slip away from a nursing home.

But if there are two gay parents, aren't there still two parents?

A few months ago, an old regular came into the restaurant I work in. He'd moved to Spokane and met a great guy. He and that great guy had adopted three children. The love that he and that guy put into those children, who live a lot better and more normal lives than they would have lived if they'd been with their "two parents" is amazing.

What's pathetic is to see this guy, who has been billing himself as a "maverick" pandering to the people who have been holding this country back and bringing it down.

Kucinich was the only candidate running this year who supports gay marriage. The others were not willing to commit to supporting anything more than civil unions, because a true liberal cannot be elected. Someday gay marriage will be legal everywhere in the USA, and same-sex couple adoptions will not be viewed as different. I believe that. It might take 50 more years...

...well, you gotta hope there will be progress SOMEDAY.

Gender and sexual orientation sure don't have anything to do with parenting skills (and why do people equate parenting and marriage? Another quaint old idea that needs to die). Kids need to be raised by people who care about them and can take care of them. Period.

This is a bit off-topic, but what would McCain know about a traditional upbringing and traditional family values? He was raised military and went to 20 schools (been through that myself, and believe me, it's not your average upbringing) -- then, he cheated on his first wife and then caused her to become a single mother. He can't walk the talk. That's for damn sure.
